Google Changing their Ad Policy
In Business, MarketingLast week Google made some major adjustments to their search engine algorithms. As reported last weekend, the popular company stated that it removed all Paid Search Ads from the right hand side of the search engine results page (SERP). Many may not even be aware of this at the moment because it is still quite recent, but this change in Google’s site is greatly affecting the way companies get their business offers across to individuals. The main factor being a lot less space for companies to show up on the first page.
Old Layout vs New Layout:
Instead of having 3 areas for Google AdWords ads to show (top, right side, bottom), there are now only 2 areas (top, bottom). There are a maximum of 4 spots at the top of the page, and 3 at the bottom of the page. What does this mean for businesses? In short, the competition for these ad spaces is even more hostile due to less spots being available overall. Organic listings are also pushed further down due to these changes. Along with this, it appears that a few extra spaces may become available for Organic Search items, which is somewhat of a positive for SEO, meaning that more spots could become available on the first page.
Why has Google done this? It appears that eye tracking studies suggest average, less technical users are unable to distinguish the difference between paid ads and organic search. This linear organization, although making the page appear slightly empty, is now much more streamlined for mobile use. This change may have something to do with the idea that mobile is rapidly changing the way users are accessing information presently. We could even see the shift to a centered search layout eventually, which resonates with today’s responsive web designs. Google is always one of the first to implement new trends and judging by recent reports, this one could be a little worrisome. It is now time to understand how to operate in a space with less real-estate and as some are speculating, maybe even consider other search engines.
